History

\nLiberty County was created in 1855. It was named out of what is often considered the common objective of American people, liberty.

Geography

\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,184 km² (843 mi²). 2,165 km² (836 mi²) of it is land and 19 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.86% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 7,021 people, 2,222 households, and 1,553 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 3,156 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.41% White, 18.43% Black or African American, 1.81% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.08% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 4.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,222 households out of which 34.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.80% are married couples living together, 13.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 25.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.00. In the county the population is spread out with 21.80% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 37.70% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 10.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 144.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 159.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $28,840, and the median income for a family is $34,244. Males have a median income of $22,078 versus $22,661 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,225. 19.90% of the population and 16.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.30% are under the age of 18 and 24.30% are 65 or older.
