A mint is a place where new coins are created or where old ones are destroyed.

The United States government has operated a series of mints since the 1790s:

  • Philadelphia Mint (mint mark: 'P' or none)
  • Denver Mint (mint mark: 'D')
  • San Francisco Mint (mint mark: 'S')
  • Carson City Mint (mint mark: 'CC')
  • Dahlonega Mint (mint mark: 'D')
  • New Orleans Mint (mint mark: 'O')
  • Charlotte Mint (mint mark: 'C')

Only the first three are currently making coins.
