Luis Muñoz Marín was born in 1898 and is considered the most important twentieth-century political figure in Puerto Rico. He was the first governor elected by Puerto Ricans. Muñoz Marín founded the Partido Popular Democrático de Puerto Rico in 1938.

At his death in 1980, Puerto Ricans irrespective of political idiologies, mourned at the passing of a real giant in the history of the island. Don Luis A. Ferre, his political oppositor, and a gentleman, was present at the burial to show his respect for the beloved national leader.

The Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport, the biggest and most used airport in the island, honors his name.
