\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,695 km² (1,813 mi²). 4,590 km² (1,772 mi²) of it is land and 105 km² (41 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.24% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,155 people, 4,101 households, and 2,837 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 4,791 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.22% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.62% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 2.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,101 households out of which 30.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% are married couples living together, 5.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% are non-families. 28.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
