Manala, in Finnish mythology is the realm of the dead. There are different places, according to the cause of death and nature of the deceased. They are:

  • Tuonela: Peaceful place of death, where children and "pure" innocent people went after death.
  • Manala: The place of common people after death: "Mennä manan majoille"; To go to cottages of Mana.
  • Surma: Place of accidental death or death in war: "Joutua surman suuhun"; to fall into death's mouth.
  • Kalma: Place of death caused by sickness or malady: "Häneen tarttui kalman koura"; The grip of Kalma´s hand took him.
