Main Page | See live article | Alphabetical index Margrethe II of Denmark, Margrethe Alexandrine Ŝorhildur Ingrid (born April 16, 1940) is the current Queen of Denmark. She was born 6 days after the German occupation of Denmark during World War II. On June 10, 1967 she married a French diplomat, Henri Marie Jean André de Laborde de Monpezat, who was created Prince Henrik of Denmark. Two children were born of this union, Frederik André Henrik Christian, Crown Prince of Denmark, on May 26, 1968, and Joachim Holger Valdemar Christian, on June 7, 1969. She ascended the throne on January 14, 1972, on the death of her father, Frederick IX (Frederik IX).
