\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,371 km² (916 mi²). 2,369 km² (915 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 4,746 people, 1,624 households, and 1,256 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (5/mi²). There are 1,898 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.01% White, 1.58% Black or African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 16.06% from other races, and 2.36% from two or more races. 40.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,624 households out of which 42.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.30% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.60% are non-families. 21.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.87 and the average family size is 3.36. In the county, the population is spread out with 33.90% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 19.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,836, and the median income for a family is $35,965. Males have a median income of $29,360 versus $19,063 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,647. 18.70% of the population and 14.90% of families are below the poverty line.
