Massena is a village located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 11,209.

Geography

United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 12.2 km² (4.7 mi²). 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.82% water.

census of 2000, there are 11,209 people, 4,793 households, and 2,938 families residing in the village. The population density is 955.4/km² (2,472.5/mi²). There are 5,103 housing units at an average density of 434.9 persons/km² (1,125.6 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.49% White, 0.36% African American, 2.11% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,793 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 38.7% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.89. In the village the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males. The median income for a household in the village is $30,783, and the median income for a family is $39,919. Males have a median income of $37,552 versus $19,892 for females.
