Memphis is a city located in Hall County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,479. It is the county seat of Hall County6.

There are 1,245 housing units at an average density of 214.6/km² (555.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 71.40% White, 9.08% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 17.63% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 26.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,024 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 33.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.03. In the city the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 86.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.5 males.
