Miami County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 28,351. Its county seat is Paola, Kansas6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,528 km² (590 mi²). 1,494 km² (577 mi²) of it is land and 35 km² (13 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.28% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 28,351 people, 10,365 households, and 7,794 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (49/mi²). There are 10,984 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.96% White, 1.54% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. 1.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,365 households out of which 37.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.50% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.80% are non-families. 21.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,665, and the median income for a family is $55,830. Males have a median income of $37,441 versus $27,271 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,408. 5.50% of the population and 3.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 5.40% are under the age of 18 and 8.40% are 65 or older.
