Middlebury is a town located in Addison County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,252.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.4 km² (14.1 mi²). 36.1 km² (13.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,252 people, 1,876 households, and 984 families residing in the town. The population density is 173.3/km² (448.7/mi²). There are 1,984 housing units at an average density of 55.0 persons/km² (142.4 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.19% White, 1.39% African American, 0.32% Native American, 2.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 2.02% from two or more races. 2.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,876 households out of which 25.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 47.5% are non-families. 39.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the town the population is spread out with 14.9% under the age of 18, 38.8% from 18 to 24, 16.5% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 86.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.1 males.
