Military - note: defence is the responsibility of the UK. A new airfield capable of accepting trans-Atlantic aircraft such as the Lockheed Tristar was built following the surrender of Argentine invasion forces. The RAF safeguards the airspace around and above the islands. The Royal Navy have a Falkland Islands guard ship. Currently, HMS Leeds Castle, a Castle Class patrol ship, is on a 3 year deployment to the Falkland Islands and the rest of the South Atlantic Overseas Territories.
