\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,107 km² (814 mi²). 2,097 km² (810 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 148,281 people, 57,996 households, and 37,581 families residing in the county. The population density is 71/km² (183/mi²). There are 60,237 housing units at an average density of 29/km² (74/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.03% White, 1.51% Black or African American, 1.85% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 2.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 57,996 households out of which 33.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.80% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.20% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
