The National University of Singapore is located in the southwest of the island in an area called Kent Ridge. It has its origins in the University of Malaya - it was formed when Singapore and Malaysia split in 1965.

NUS was listed as one of the best universities in Asia by AsiaWeek magazine (now defunct). With the cooperation of Singapore's Ministry of Education, it aims to be a global education player. Its medical and law schools are well known in the southeast Asia region. Many of the students in NUS come from neighbouring countries and China.
