\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,813 km² (1,086 mi²). 2,610 km² (1,008 mi²) of it is land and 203 km² (79 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.23% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 45,124 people, 16,491 households, and 11,906 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (45/mi²). There are 18,449 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.84% White, 16.79% Black or African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.33% Pacific Islander, 9.45% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 15.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 16,491 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.70% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.14.
