Its termini are at an intersection with New Jersey State Highway 23 in Sussex, New Jersey and the border with New York at Wantage, New Jersey. The designation of this road was NJ 84 until 1966, when Interstate 84 opened in New York. The New York Department of Transportation redesignated NY 84 as NY 284 so that all of New York's highways would have unique numbers. NY 84 connected with NJ 84, so New Jersey followed suit.
