Newport is a city located in Orleans County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,005.

United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.7 km² (7.6 mi²). 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²) of it is land and 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 20.87% water.

The racial makeup of the city is 96.14% White, 0.76% African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. 1.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,086 households out of which 26.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.0% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 42.9% are non-families. 35.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.84. In the city the population is spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.7 males.
