Sir Nigel Gresley (1876-1941, born Herbert Nigel Gresley) was one of Britain's most famous Steam locomotive engineers who worked for the Great Northern Railway company from 1911 to 1922 as locomotive superintendant and for the London and North East Railway company (LNER) from 1923 to 1941 as Chief Mechanical Engineer. He was the designer of some of the most famous Steam locomotives in Britain including the LNER A4 Pacific class, which includes 4468 'Mallard' which still holds the record for being the fastest steam locomotive in the world.

Sir Nigel Gresley died on 5 April 1941 after a short illness.
