Novi is a city located in Oakland County, Michigan, in the Detroit metropolitan area, approximately 25 miles from the center of Detroit. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 47,386.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 81.1 km² (31.3 mi²). 78.9 km² (30.5 mi²) of it is land and 2.2 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.74% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 47,386 people, 18,726 households, and 12,321 families residing in the city. The population density is 600.5/km² (1,555.2/mi²). There are 19,649 housing units at an average density of 249.0/km² (644.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.26% White, 1.92% African American, 0.19% Native American, 8.67% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. 1.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,726 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 35.7% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $71,918, and the median income for a family is $91,369. Males have a median income of $65,590 versus $38,432 for females. The per capita income for the city is $35,992. 2.2% of the population and 1.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.4% are under the age of 18 and 2.7% are 65 or older.

Government

Novi's government is a council-manager system with a weak mayor. The seven council members are elected for four-year terms, and are responsible for hiring a city manager, who oversees the everyday business of running the city. The mayor, elected for a two-year term, has largely ceremonial duties.
