The NSW State Conservatorium of Music was established in 1916, in Sydney. A Newcastle branch was established in 1952. The NSW State Conservatorium of Music was dissolved by the Higher Education (Amalgamation) Act 1990. Control of the Sydney branch was transferred to the University of Sydney, and continues to this day as the Sydney Conservatorium of Music; control of the Newscastle branch was transferred to the University of Newcastle, and continues to this day as the Conservatorium School of Music and Drama of the Faculty of Education and Arts of the University of Newcastle.
