Opatija (Italian Abbazia), is a popular summer and winter resort in Croatia, northeastern Istria, just southwest of the port of Rijeka and 56 miles southeast of Trieste by rail.

It is situated on the Gulf of Kvarner (Quarnero or Carnaro) in a sheltered position at the foot of Učka mountain (Monte Maggiore, with Vojak peak at 1401 m), and is surrounded by beautiful woods of laurel.

The average temperature is 10°C (50°F) in winter, and 25°F (77°F) in summer.

The old abbey, San Giacomo della Priluca, from which the place derives its name (abbazia is abbey in Italian), has been converted into a villa.

The whole sea-coast to the north and south of Opatija is rocky and picturesque, and contains several smaller winter-resorts.
