Palatka is a city located in Putnam County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,033. It is the county seat of Putnam County6.

census of 2000, there are 10,033 people, 3,880 households, and 2,421 families residing in the city. The population density is 556.6/km² (1,442.1/mi²). There are 4,318 housing units at an average density of 239.5/km² (620.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 48.93% White, 48.43% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 2.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,880 households out of which 31.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.0% are married couples living together, 24.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.10. In the city the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.8 males.
