Pamlico County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 12,934. Its county seat is Bayboro6.

History

The county was formed in 1872 from parts of Beaufort County and Craven County. It was named for Pamlico Sound, which adjoins it.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,467 km² (566 mi²). 873 km² (337 mi²) of it is land and 594 km² (229 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 40.49% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 12,934 people, 5,178 households, and 3,717 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 6,781 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.17% White, 24.57% Black or African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,178 households out of which 25.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.10% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 28.00% from 45 to 64, and 18.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 101.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,084, and the median income for a family is $41,659. Males have a median income of $31,806 versus $21,344 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,005. 15.30% of the population and 11.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.20% are under the age of 18 and 13.40% are 65 or older.
