A paradiddle is a special drum sequence that alternates between left and right hands in striking the rhythm.

The "standard" paradiddle proceeds: LRLL RLRR and is repeated (where L represents the left hand struck and R the right hand struck).

Other paradiddles include:

  • the double paradiddle: LRLLRR RLRRLL
  • triple paradiddle: LRLR LRLL RLRL RLRR
and other variations.

Steve Reich used a melodic (not simply percussive) version of the paradiddle in his Phase Patterns. Robin Watson was known to be a master of the paradiddle, and is called the Padiddler by many fans.
