Since 2001 he has been a professor at Cornell University. The pre-print archive was developed while he was a member of staff of Los Alamos National Laboratory, 1990 - 2001. For his work on the archive he has been awarded the PAM Award from the Special Libraries Association and in 2002 a MacArthur Fellowship.
