Paul Grice (1913 - 1988) was a philosopher, remembered mainly for his substantial contribution to the study of meaning within language, including his maxims of conversation. In particular, Grice's work is one of the foundations of the modern study of pragmatics. Many of Grice's essays/papers were published in the book Studies in the Way of Words (1989).
