Person County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 35,623. Its county seat is Roxboro6.

History

The county was formed in 1791 from Caswell County. It was named for Thomas Person, a general in the American Revolutionary War.

Geography

According to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,047 km² (404 mi²). 1,016 km² (392 mi²) of it is land and 31 km² (12 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.92% water.

The county is divided into nine townships: Allensville, Bushy Fork, Cunningham, Flat River, Holloway, Mount Tirzah, Olive Hill, Roxboro, and Woodsdale.

census2 of 2000, there are 35,623 people, 14,085 households, and 10,113 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (91/mi²). There are 15,504 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (40/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 68.79% White, 28.21% Black or African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.37% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 2.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,085 households out of which 31.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.80% are married couples living together, 13.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 30.60% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,159, and the median income for a family is $44,598. Males have a median income of $30,970 versus $22,804 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,709. 12.00% of the population and 9.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.90% are under the age of 18 and 17.30% are 65 or older.
