BDSM players are highly inventive in employing their tools in play, sometimes using ordinary household items as sex toys, known as "pervertables".

Examples:

  • Bamboo skewers, used in shish-ka-bobs, can be used to poke or scratch the skin.
  • Ping-pong paddles or spatulas can be used for light spanking.
  • Hairbrushes can be used for spanking with the flat side, or the brush can be used for friction.
  • Cling wrap can be used for bondage and mummification.
  • Clothespins can be used in large numbers to pinch nipples, genitals, earlobes, tongues or any other loose skin.
  • Cheap paraffin candles for hot wax. Beeswax candles should not be used as they melt at a much higher temperature.
  • Ice cubes for cold.
  • Leather belts for spanking (though this can set off abuse associations.)
  • Bandannas as blindfolds or gags.
  • Snake bite kits for nipple suction.
  • Mentholated rubs for sensation.

Some household items are not safe for use in BDSM play:
  • Silk scarves or neckties are not suitable for bondage, as they can slip and pinch nerves and blood vessels in the wrists and ankles.
  • The plastic yellow rope commonly found in garages is too thin and harsh for bondage.

Remember, safety first.
