Pickled snakes are the most commonly found preserved animals, put inside alcoholic drinks in China, such as rice wine.

This common practice in China is quite popular, however, there are occasionally consequences to this bottling trait. On October 14 or 15, 2002 a man was attacked by a pickled snake. Opening his bottle on his lunch break, the snake sprang out, biting him on the neck. Li, the victim of this accident, was taken to a Suizhou hospital, and was not in any danger from the actions. The Xin Bao newspaper said the bottle's stopper was made from wood or cork and allowed air into the vessel, helping the snake to survive for a year.
