Pineville is a town in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina between Charlotte and South Carolina. It is perhaps most famous as the birthplace of James Knox Polk. It is mostly a quiet town, but it does have some industries; the Cone Mills textile plant was until recently here, and behind the town hall and post office a chemical plant makes a continuous drone. The town serves the nearby rural population; there is still Blankenship's Feed and Seed on Main Street next to the railroad tracks. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,449.

There are 1,760 housing units at an average density of 190.3/km² (492.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 80.05% White, 10.00% African American, 0.20% Native American, 3.31% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 4.00% from other races, and 2.38% from two or more races. 11.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,632 households out of which 19.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.1% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 54.4% are non-families. 42.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.04 and the average family size is 2.80. In the town the population is spread out with 17.5% under the age of 18, 13.0% from 18 to 24, 42.2% from 25 to 44, 16.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.6 males. The median income for a household in the town is $38,261, and the median income for a family is $45,500. Males have a median income of $30,833 versus $29,508 for females.
