The Porsche 924 was the first automobile sold by Porsche fitted with a front-mounted, water-cooled engine. (This arrangement is normal for other manufacturers, but unusual for Porsche.) Originally designed for the manufacturing company VAG to be a replacement for the co-branded Porsche 914, it was later released as a Porsche only design in 1976. A large number of components originated from VAG though, including the engine.

Later models of the car were fitted with a turbocharger, while the 924S model included a larger engine.

The car was later replaced by the Porsche 944.
