Port Moresby, population 193,242 (1990), is the capital of Papua New Guinea. The city is located on the Gulf of Papua. Rubber, gold, and copra are the main exports.

Port Moresby was founded by Captain John Moresby, who arrived in the area in 1873. The British occupied the city in 1883. During World War II an important Allied base was located at Port Moresby.

A new capital is being built in nearby Waigani.
