Rāmnicu Vālcea (population: 107,656) is a city in the Vālcea county, Romania.

History

Inhabited since the Dacian and Roman times, a fortress was built in the Middle Ages and during Matei Basarab and Constantin Brancoveanu, it became an important cultural center, here being built the first paper mill and printing press in Romania. During the 1848 revolution, on July 29 was sang for the first time Desteapta-te, Romane, the current national anthem of Romania.
