The name is derived either from the fact that the boys were renting themselves out, or that they paid their rent with their earnings. Prince Albert Victor (the prince sometimes put forth as a candidate for Jack the Ripper) was implicated in a scandal involving a rentboy brothel, as were many aristocrats of the time.
