Roseburg is a town and the country seat of Douglas County, Oregon6. This city was named for Aaron Rose, who settled within the current city limits September 23, 1851, and managed a tavern. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,017.

History

Roseburg was voted county seat in 1854, defeating Winchester, Oregon for the honors. The important buildings in Winchester were moved to Roseburg by 1860.

Traditionally, the primary industries have been agriculture and lumber. The headquarters of Roseburg Forset Products is located in this town. However, in the 1990s the production of wine has overtaken timber as the chief industry.

Geography

Roseburg is located at 43°13'5" North, 123°21'22" West (43.217964, -123.356047)1. Roseburg sits near the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork of the Umpqua River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.4 km² (9.4 mi²). 23.9 km² (9.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.02% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 20,017 people, 8,237 households, and 5,098 families residing in the city. The population density is 838.2/km² (2,171.1/mi²). There are 8,838 housing units at an average density of 370.1/km² (958.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.56% White, 0.30% African American, 1.30% Native American, 0.99% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 2.48% from two or more races. 3.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,237 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.1% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,250, and the median income for a family is $40,172. Males have a median income of $32,624 versus $25,707 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,082. 15.1% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.9% are under the age of 18 and 9.2% are 65 or older.
