\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,626 km² (628 mi²). 1,478 km² (571 mi²) of it is land and 148 km² (57 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.12% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,246 people, 8,651 households, and 6,401 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). There are 11,520 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.64% White, 12.64% Black or African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.63% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 4.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,651 households out of which 30.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.98.
