There are 2,589 housing units at an average density of 109.4/km² (283.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 39.76% White, 59.03% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 0.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,362 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% are married couples living together, 25.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% are non-families. 30.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.13.
