Scott La Rock was the DJ for the hip-hop group Boogie Down Productions, together with MC KRS-One. The two met in 1986 at a homeless shelter where KRS was staying and La Rock was a social worker. Their debut album, Criminal Minded was an instant hit and is considered a classic and masterpiece of the genre.

Much to the chagrin of the music world, La Rock was shot to death in 1987 while attempting to intervene in a dispute between two rappers. Though it might have meant the end of BDP, the group continued without him. One result was KRS's transformation into a more thoughtful artist who continually spoke out against violence in hip-hop (cf. Stop the Violence on BDP's album By Any Means Necessary), and still makes constant respectful reference to the deceased La Rock.
