Selangor (population 4.1 million) is a state in central Peninsular Malaysia, located on the Strait of Malacca. The capital city is Shah Alam. It is Malaysia's most populous state, largely thanks to the rapid economic growth taking place there, mostly propelled by industry, and the growth of the Kuala Lumpur conurbation (known as the Klang Valley, due to its sprawl within the floodplain of the Klang river.)

Until the 1970s, Kuala Lumpur was the capital of Selangor, but the city was made a federal territory in 1974, separating it from the rest of the state.
