Toyotomi Hideyoshi was attacking the Mori castle of Takamatsu when news of Oda Nobunaga's murder reached him. Hideyoshi had already diverted a river to flood the castle and when he suggested a negotiated end to the siege, the Mori (who were unaware of Oda's murder) were willing to listen.
