The British author Peter York coined the term "Sloane Ranger". His book the Official Sloane Ranger Handbook (co-authored with Ann Barr) described the lifestyle of upper-middle class young women living in west London. The term derives from Sloane Square, an area of London where they would typically live or hang out. The term is now applied to men as well as women.

The archetypal Sloane Ranger (as described by the book) was Princess Diana before her marriage to Charles, Prince of Wales.
