Smallville is the fictional town in the Midwest USA which Superboy protected and in which most of his crime-fighting adventures took place. It was also the town in which the young Clark Kent grew up before moving to Metropolis to begin his career as Superman. Though the actual location of the town was never originally specified in any one state, and its location varied widely throughout many stories (several of which placed it just outside Metropolis on the North American east coast), it was eventually placed in Kansas by later writers. The town was first named in Superboy #2 (1949).

Smallville is also the title of a US television series, created by Warner Brothers, (filmed in the Lower Mainland in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), following the adventures of the young Clark Kent in his hometown before he became Superman. The first season, while relying heavily on Kryptonite as a plot element, eventually established its cast of characters and back-story, and rose steadily in popularity, sufficient for a second season (as of February 2003) and also a third (as of October 2003).

The most significant plot arc is the relationship of Clark and his best friend, Lex Luthor. The editors are laying the groundwork for how their relationship will inevitably slide into the legendary conflict between superhero and supervillain.
