Stafford County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 4,789. Its county seat is Saint John, Kansas6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,058 km² (795 mi²). 2,051 km² (792 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,789 people, 2,010 households, and 1,294 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 2,458 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.97% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.97% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 5.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,010 households out of which 29.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.90% are married couples living together, 5.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.60% are non-families. 33.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 5.40% from 18 to 24, 24.60% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 21.20% who are 65 years of age or older.
