\nTaney County is a county located in the U.S. State of Missouri. The county was named in honor of Roger Brooke Taney, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Its county seat is Forsyth6.

Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,687 km² (651 mi²). 1,638 km² (632 mi²) of it is land and 50 km² (19 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.93% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 39,703 people, 16,158 households, and 11,052 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (63/mi²). There are 19,688 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (31/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.22% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 2.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 16,158 households out of which 27.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.60% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.83. In the county the population is spread out with 22.40% under the age of 18, 10.20% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $30,898, and the median income for a family is $36,757. Males have a median income of $25,431 versus $19,655 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,267. 12.40% of the population and 9.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.60% are under the age of 18 and 8.80% are 65 or older.
