Increasingly in Singapore, students who perform well in school are given the option to bypass the O-levels, and take the A-levels instead at the age of 18. This scheme is dubbed the "through-train programme".

From 2004, students are able to skip the O Levels and head on straight to the A Levels at:

  • National Junior College
  • Nanyang Girls' High School, The Chinese High School, Hwa Chong Junior College (students from the first two head on to HCJC after 4 years)
  • Raffles Institution, Raffles Girls' School, Raffles Junior College (students from the first two head on to RJC after 4 years)

One school, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), has allowed some students to abandon the British system and go Swiss by dropping the GCE exams all together and adopting the International Baccalaurate.
