The Ting Yuen was the Chinese flagship at the Battle of the Yalu River, which took place on September 17, 1894, between the Japanese and Chinese. The ship was the flagship of Admiral Ting Ju ch'ang, who unfortunately became a casualty of the battle when the Ting Yuen fired its opening shot.

The Ting Yuen was 7670 tons loaded and had a speed of 14.5 knots. At 10 knots, Ting Yuen had a range of around 4,500 nautical miles. Armament consisted of four 12-inch Krupp 25 calibre breechloading guns in two barbettes with a secondary armament of two 5.9-inch, 35 calibre Krupp breechloaders, six 37mm guns and three torpedo tubes built above the waterline. Crew was around 363 officers and men.
