Tiverton is a town located in Newport County, Rhode Island. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,282.

United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 17.0 km² (6.6 mi²). 10.8 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 36.63% water.

census of 2000, there are 7,282 people, 3,044 households, and 2,088 families residing in the town. The population density is 674.2/km² (1,747.5/mi²). There are 3,199 housing units at an average density of 296.2 persons/km² (767.7 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.79% White, 0.37% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,044 households out of which 26.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.5% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 31.4% are non-families. 27.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.90. In the town the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older.
