From archeological evidence we can conclude that there was a settling on the hill in the bronze age and much later a Roman village that was burnt down during the Boadicea uprising. All Hallows church is renowned for fragments of Romanesque architecture dating back to 680 AD. On the hill public executions of high profile criminals was carried out. Among those executed there are: Thomas More - 1535 Guilford Dudley - 1554 Mervyn Tuchet, otherwise Audley, 2nd Earl of Castlehaven - 1631 William Laud - 1645 Henry Vane the Younger - 1662 James Crofts (Scott), 1st Duke of Monmouth - 1685 Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat - 1747 Women were generally executed within the confines of the Tower of London rather than on Tower Hill.
