\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 446 km² (172 mi²). 432 km² (167 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.11% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 9,319 people, 3,998 households, and 2,826 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (56/mi²). There are 6,282 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (38/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.80% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,998 households out of which 20.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.90% are married couples living together, 6.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 26.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.61. In the county the population is spread out with 16.30% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 20.50% from 25 to 44, 28.30% from 45 to 64, and 25.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 49 years. For every 100 females there are 89.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.80 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,950, and the median income for a family is $37,295. Males have a median income of $28,657 versus $21,813 for females.
