The University of North Carolina System is a federation of all sixteen public universities in North Carolina.

History

The system was established in 1932 as the Consolidated University of North Carolina with three campuses; three more were added in the 1960s. It assumed its present name July 1, 1972, with the incorporation of the remaining ten state-supported four-year institutions. Its current members and the years in which they became part of the system are:
